Where are you currently located? Where have you spent most of 2020?
I am currently located in Flatbush, Brooklyn. I have spent most of 2020 between there, and my job which is located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Has the chaos and unrest we’re experiencing helped or hindered your creative process?
Everything going on hasn’t helped or hindered my creative process. My process as a street photographer has always been to photograph what is going on in the street, so if there’s chaos and unrest I try my best to capture it.

How have these photographs differed from your usual subject matter and/or perspective?
They haven’t. I’ve photographed protests in the past, but the only difference between then and now is confidence to share these images.

It’s January 2020. If you could give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Same advice that I always tell myself: Just keep getting out there and shooting.

Three selfish wishes?
Only one: I wish to be more confident in myself and my work.

How have these photographs differed from your usual subject matter and/or perspective?
The series is solely focused on a specific area/street and small parameters that I became connected with over the past year since living here. This work feels very personal and close to home; most of these individuals and spaces
I see every day and have grown to know over time.

Has the chaos and unrest we’re experiencing helped or hindered your creative process?
I think it’s connected me with the things that I needed to be connected with,  to learn more and to be able to share important stories. In the beginning, I  had felt hindered in my process—exploring/adapting to new ways and boundaries in different forms—but eventually, I think it became helpful.

It’s January 2020. If you could give yourself one piece of advice, what
would it be?
To be patient and trust the process.

What does positive change look and feel like to you?
For me, it starts with ourselves and making necessary changes as individuals so that we can collectively be better. Acknowledgment, accountability, and developing awareness so we can better see and listen.

Three selfish wishes?
To be consistent with healthy habits; to spend another month in Iceland; to have my family together again.

Three selfless wishes?
Harmony amongst our nation; affordable healthcare; better efforts toward climate change.

In Solidarity
This is B. I talked to him about blurring his face from recognition for his protection but he and many protestors don’t give a shit. “I don’t care. I’m in danger just walking the streets Black, I’ll be damned if I have to cover my face while I fight back.”

On some Moses shit, this woman parted a sea of people during a George Floyd protest. You can feel that she had enough. I can only imagine what it feels like to be Black in a country that was designed to oppress and deny like that gossiping Auntie who you don’t trust but are expected to respect because you’re family. I wish we could all stand for what’s good in this country.

Bye George
I was always told that you make time for the ones you care for. If that meant waving through a window during a pandemic because your said love one is high risk, then so be it. George was hard of hearing so we couldn’t speak but a wave was all I needed at that time. Bye George.

Tokayo Sawrvy Colin
I took this photo in the beginning of COVID and was knee- deep in feelings of despair and anxiety (a bit dramatic but I was a little tooooooo deep in a box of Cheez-Its). I was curious how others were staying creative, so I decided to meet up with my boys Swarvy and Colin (Tokayo), a producer and rapper duo that were steady working on music and writing during this time. Reminded me that the creativity doesn’t stop when your normal does.

That Feeling
The hits just keep on coming this year, and sometimes it’s hard to remember that light carefree feeling while stuck inside with everything going on right now. But then you remember it’s possible. You’ve felt that way before, and you will again. I’m lucky to get that reminder from my neighbor’s kid who reminds me that it’s the little things, like a hose from the yard on a summer day.
